Lake Ontario Fishing Report – The upcoming season is looking great!

Lake Ontario is one of the Great Lakes, aka, “Finger Lakes” of North America and is the most easterly of them all. It is the smallest of the five and is held on the north and southwest by the Canadian province of Ontario, and the southern region mainly by Rochester, NY. About 75% of Lake Ontario’s water comes from the Niagara River via Lake Erie and 93% flows out through the St. Lawrence River. That’s why there are so many Rochester fishing charters popping up as frequently as they have been. Last year the fishing in upstate new york was excellent.

Lake Ontario Trout – A variety of trout species find habit in Lake Ontario and none is more prized than the rainbow trout or steelhead. Largely recognized for it’s gameful leaps when hooked, Lake Ontario anglers have been catching world class fish for many years. The average Lake Ontario, rainbow weighs 5-8 pounds, although landing a trophy steelhead weighing over 19 pounds are not uncommon. Open water fish are caught using the same techniques as those used for salmon, with fish moving inshore in the spring and fall, and moving deeper during the warm summer months.

Lake Ontario Salmon – Lake Ontario is well known for it’s incredible salmon fishery. The Chinook or Pacific Salmon are the kings in lake ontario waters with many salmon topping the scales at well over 25 pounds with many upwards to the 40 pound mark. Other Lake Ontario salmon species are the coho salmon, pink salmon and atlantic salmon.

What makes lake ontario salmon fishing so great is that New York State has been stocking the lake with over 3.4 million salmonids every year into the lake and most of its tributaries. Whether you want to catch coho salmon, the giant chinook king salmon, brown trout, lake trout or steelheads, Lake Ontario will provide an awesome day of fishing.
